How YouTube Actually Calculates Creator Payouts
Revenue earned through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) does not represent a simple "flat fee per view." Instead, video monetization is governed by dynamic advertiser bidding, audience demographics, viewer retention, and format types:
- Long-form Revenue Split (55% Creator / 45% YouTube): Advertisers bid in an auction via Google AdSense. YouTube takes 45% of gross advertiser spend, and distributes 55% to the creator.
- Shorts Monetization Pool (45% Creator Split): Ads on Shorts appear between videos in the infinite scroll feed. All ad revenue is pooled together, music licensing costs are deducted, and creators receive 45% of their allocated share based on their proportion of total Shorts views.
- Monetized Playbacks vs Total Views: Not every view displays an ad. Viewers using YouTube Premium, ad-blocking software, or browsing in low-ad inventory regions reduce the monetized playback ratio (typically 50% to 80% of total views).
